New Law Raises Maximum Hiring Age for Worcester Police Officers to 39

Crime Trackers Massachusetts proudly welcomes the signing of H.3929, legislation raising the maximum age for appointment as a Worcester police officer from 32 to 39. This is a major victory for public safety, law enforcement recruitment, and the future of policing in the City of Worcester.

For years, police departments across Massachusetts have faced an unprecedented staffing crisis. Departments are competing for fewer qualified applicants while experienced men and women who are ready to serve have been prevented from doing so because of outdated hiring restrictions. Today’s action removes one of those barriers and opens the door for military veterans, first responders, professionals from other careers, and individuals with valuable life experience to answer the call to serve.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts commends Worcester City Councilor-at-Large Kathleen M. Toomey for her determination and leadership in championing this legislation from the very beginning. Meaningful public safety reform requires elected officials who are willing to lead, stay engaged, and fight for practical solutions. Councilor Toomey’s commitment helped move this legislation from an idea into law, and Worcester is stronger because of it.

We also recognize Governor Maura Healey for signing this legislation into law and Senator Michael Moore for his leadership in advancing the measure through the Massachusetts Legislature. Public safety is strongest when state and local leaders work together to solve real problems, and this legislation is an example of that partnership producing meaningful results.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts further recognizes Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier and the entire Worcester Police Department command staff for their continued efforts to recruit, retain, and develop the next generation of police officers. Departments cannot protect communities without qualified personnel, and expanding the pool of eligible applicants is one more step toward ensuring Worcester has the staffing needed to meet the demands of modern policing.

We also want to recognize the outstanding work of Crime Trackers Massachusetts State House Liaison Molly Tatum. While much of her work takes place behind the scenes, Molly has been a relentless advocate at the State House, building relationships, engaging with lawmakers, tracking legislation, and ensuring public safety issues remain at the forefront of legislative discussions. Her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to supporting law enforcement continue to make a meaningful impact across the Commonwealth.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts has consistently advocated for practical, commonsense policies that strengthen public safety, support law enforcement professionals, and ensure departments have every available tool to recruit the best candidates. We believe experience, maturity, leadership, integrity, and a commitment to public service are qualities that make exceptional police officers, regardless of whether someone begins that career at 23 or 38.

Today’s signing is more than a change in state law—it is an investment in the future of the Worcester Police Department and in the safety of every resident and visitor to the City of Worcester. Crime Trackers Massachusetts looks forward to seeing the positive impact this legislation will have for years to come and congratulates everyone whose leadership, persistence, and dedication helped make this important public safety initiative a reality.
