The Basic Massachusetts Police Recruit Preparation Program is physically demanding and designed to prepare participants for the physical expectations of a Massachusetts Police Academy. All participants must be capable of safely engaging in daily physical training, defensive tactics, and scenario-based exercises.
These standards are intended to promote safety, readiness, and progressive improvement. Failure to meet or maintain physical fitness standards may result in remedial training, temporary restriction from activities, or dismissal from the program.
General Fitness Expectations
Participants are expected to arrive with a baseline level of fitness that allows full participation in training. At a minimum, participants should be capable of running moderate distances, performing calisthenics, and sustaining physical effort over extended periods.
Participants must be able to:
- Run distances ranging from approximately 1.5 to 3 miles
- Perform bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, planks, and squats
- Participate in daily physical conditioning sessions
- Engage safely in control tactics, defensive movements, and scenario-based training
Training Components
Physical training during the program focuses on developing the following areas:
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Functional fitness and agility
- Flexibility and mobility
- Stress-based physical performance
Training intensity increases progressively throughout the program.
Fitness Assessments
Participants may undergo periodic fitness assessments to evaluate progress and identify areas requiring improvement. Assessments are used as training tools and may include timed runs, calisthenics, circuit training, and functional movement evaluations.
Failure to demonstrate adequate effort, improvement, or safe participation may result in corrective or remedial training.
Injury and Medical Responsibility
Participants are responsible for reporting injuries, pain, or medical concerns immediately. Continuing to train while injured without notifying staff may result in further injury and disciplinary action.
Participants must manage hydration, nutrition, rest, and recovery to safely meet program demands. Medical clearance may be required for continued participation following injury or illness.
Safety and Accountability
All physical training must be completed in accordance with instructor guidance and safety protocols. Participants must follow warm-up, cool-down, and stretching requirements as directed.
Unsafe conduct, refusal to participate, or failure to follow physical training instructions may result in removal from training activities or dismissal from the program.
