Admission to the Basic Massachusetts Police Recruit Preparation Program is selective and based on an applicant’s ability to meet the physical, mental, and professional expectations of a live-in, academy-style training environment.
Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

Applicants must submit a complete application packet, which includes:
- Completed application form
- Government-issued photo identification
- Proof of education (high school diploma or GED)
- Signed liability waiver and program acknowledgments
- Medical clearance or physical readiness certification (if required)
Incomplete, inaccurate, or falsified applications will not be considered.
Step 2: Application Review & Screening
Program staff will review each application to verify eligibility and suitability. This review may include:
- Verification of age and education requirements
- Review of disclosed criminal, disciplinary, or employment history
- Firearms eligibility screening
- Evaluation of overall readiness for a residential training environment
All information provided by the applicant must be truthful and complete.
Step 3: Interview Process
Qualified applicants may be invited to participate in a personal interview. The interview is used to assess:
- Professionalism and maturity
- Communication skills
- Motivation for law enforcement service
- Ability to follow instructions and accept feedback
- Understanding of the program’s demands and expectations
Step 4: Physical Readiness Assessment
Applicants may be required to complete a physical readiness assessment to ensure they can safely participate in physical training, control tactics, and scenario-based exercises.
Failure to meet physical readiness standards may result in denial or deferral of admission.
Step 5: Final Selection & Acceptance
Final acceptance decisions are based on:
- Completion of all application requirements
- Interview performance
- Physical readiness
- Program capacity and scheduling
Accepted applicants will receive written notification with reporting instructions, required equipment lists, and program policies.
