Admission to the Basic Massachusetts Police Recruit Preparation Program is selective. Applicants must demonstrate the maturity, physical readiness, and commitment required to succeed in a live-in, academy-style environment.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Age: At least 18 years of age at the time of application
- Citizenship: United States citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license in good standing
- Language: Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly
- Residency: No residency requirement (unless otherwise specified)
Physical Readiness Requirements
Applicants must be capable of participating in daily physical training and defensive tactics. Prior to acceptance, applicants must:
- Certify they are physically able to engage in strenuous exercise
- Be free of medical conditions that would prevent safe participation
- Submit a medical clearance from a licensed healthcare provider (if required)
Applicants should be prepared for running, calisthenics, strength training, and scenario-based physical exercises.
Character & Conduct Standards
All applicants must demonstrate good moral character and professionalism. Disqualifying factors may include:
- Felony convictions
- Serious misdemeanor convictions involving violence, dishonesty, or moral turpitude
- Active restraining orders
- History of conduct inconsistent with law enforcement standards
Admission decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and do not guarantee eligibility for appointment as a police officer or acceptance into a Massachusetts Police Academy.
Drug & Alcohol Policy
- Applicants must agree to a zero-tolerance drug policy
- Illegal drug use may result in disqualification
- Applicants must agree to comply with any drug or alcohol testing requirements during the program
Firearms & Safety Eligibility
Because the program includes firearms training:
- Applicants must be legally eligible to possess and handle firearms under Massachusetts and federal law
- Any disqualifying firearms restrictions must be disclosed during the application process
Live-In Program Requirements
This is a 30-day residential program. Applicants must:
- Commit to residing at the training facility for the full program duration
- Comply with all rules, schedules, and conduct standards
- Agree to inspections, formations, and structured daily routines
- Maintain professional behavior at all times
Failure to adhere to program rules may result in dismissal.
