Multiple Illegal Firearms Seized in Springfield; Several Arrested Across Three Incidents

Crime Trackers Massachusetts is issuing the following statement regarding multiple recent firearm-related incidents investigated by the Springfield Police Department in Springfield.

Over the course of March 25th through March 27th, Springfield Police officers and specialized units seized numerous illegal firearms — including multiple ghost guns, high-capacity magazines, and additional weapons connected to violent and drug-related activity — while placing several individuals under arrest.

On March 27, officers responded to a trespassing call on Columbia Terrace and detained six individuals inside a residence. During the investigation, a loaded firearm was recovered from Jose Maldonado (18). A loaded ghost gun was recovered from a 17-year-old male. Officers also located a second ghost gun inside the apartment equipped with an extended magazine capable of holding 31 rounds and loaded with 20 rounds. Arrested in this incident were Jose Maldonado (18), Jaiden Acosta (18), Jainice Dias (18), a 17-year-old male, a 16-year-old female, and a 15-year-old female.

On March 25, members of the Springfield Police Metro Unit observed a suspect appearing to manipulate a firearm near Main Street and Montpelier Street before entering a restaurant. Officers detained multiple individuals and recovered a semi-automatic firearm from Luis Flores-Rivera (18). A second loaded illegal firearm was recovered from a cross-body bag that had been passed between individuals. Flores-Rivera, a 14-year-old male, and a 15-year-old female were arrested on firearms charges. A 17-year-old male was also detained and found to have two outstanding warrants.

On March 26, following a ShotSpotter-related shooting investigation on Maple Street, Springfield Police Special Victims Unit detectives identified Javier Nieves (30) as a suspect. Working with the Meriden Police Department, officers located and arrested Nieves in Connecticut. During the investigation, officers seized two illegal handguns reported stolen, an AR-style rifle, and two high-capacity magazines capable of holding 30 and 45 rounds. A search also yielded approximately 30 grams of suspected cocaine, 10 pills of suspected fentanyl, and more than 128 grams of marijuana.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts commends the Springfield Police Department, including patrol officers, the Metro Unit, and the Special Victims Unit, for their decisive and coordinated efforts across these incidents. These cases highlight the continued presence of illegal firearms — particularly ghost guns and high-capacity weapons — in our communities, and the increasing involvement of younger individuals in these situations.

The actions taken in these incidents removed multiple illegal weapons from the streets, disrupted criminal activity, and helped prevent further violence. Crime Trackers Massachusetts stands firmly behind the work being done and recognizes the level of coordination and investigative effort required to bring these cases together.

We remain committed to supporting efforts that enhance public safety and bring awareness to the realities facing communities across the Commonwealth.
