Official Statement From Crime Trackers Massachusetts Regarding Officer Alexander Maracallo

Over the past week, body camera footage has circulated across social media showing a deeply disturbing and violent attack on a Worcester Police officer who was trapped inside a fleeing vehicle on January 16, 2026. The footage is difficult to watch, but it shows exactly the kind of danger police officers face every single day while protecting our communities.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Worcester Police officers were conducting a property check on Main Street when they encountered suspicious activity believed to be related to drugs. What began as a routine check quickly turned into a life-or-death struggle.

A suspect identified as John Slater, 23, suddenly reached into the vehicle, turned the ignition on, and ordered the driver, Sarah McMahon, 22, to “go.” As the vehicle accelerated into traffic, Officer Alexander Maracallo became trapped inside.

The body camera footage released in March shows the terrifying moments that followed. Officer Maracallo can be heard repeatedly shouting, “Stop the car!” and “Let me get out!” as the vehicle sped through traffic. Inside the moving vehicle, Slater allegedly tried to force the officer out and even attempted to reach for the officer’s firearm — a brazen and violent act that could have ended in tragedy.

At the same time, a second officer standing outside the vehicle was violently struck by the passenger door with such force that his watch was ripped from his wrist.

For nearly a full minute, Officer Maracallo was locked in a desperate fight inside that moving vehicle. Through sheer determination, training, and courage, he was able to shut off the ignition and bring the car to a stop, allowing other officers to move in and take both suspects into custody.

Both officers were taken to a local hospital and thankfully released without serious injury. It is nothing short of a miracle that this incident did not end with a police officer being killed.

John Slater is now facing serious charges including assault with intent to murder, kidnapping, attempting to disarm a police officer, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and possession of crack cocaine.

Sarah McMahon has been charged with kidnapping, assault with intent to murder, and drug-related offenses.

Let us be absolutely clear: this was not a misunderstanding. This was not a minor incident. This was a violent attack on a police officer in broad daylight.

Officer Alexander Maracallo is a veteran member of the Worcester Police Department who has served this city for more than a decade. Those who know him know he is one of the finest officers in Worcester, and frankly one of the finest officers in Massachusetts and in this country.

What he endured on January 16 was horrific. His courage in the face of that danger is exactly why Worcester residents are safer today.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts also commends the second officer involved in this incident for their bravery, as well as the Worcester Police officers who rushed to the scene to assist Officer Maracallo and bring this dangerous situation under control — including Officer Monicka Jean-Baptiste.

When you watch that body camera footage, remember this: while most people were going about their morning, a police officer was fighting for his life inside a moving vehicle on the streets of Worcester.

This is the reality of policing.

And it is exactly why the men and women who wear the badge deserve the respect, support, and protection of the communities they serve.

Crime Trackers Massachusetts stands firmly with Officer Maracallo and every member of the Worcester Police Department.
