New Bedford Sgt. Gary Sarmento Retires After 34 Years of Service

Crime Trackers Massachusetts extends its sincere congratulations to Sgt. Gary Sarmento on his retirement following more than three decades of dedicated service to the New Bedford Police Department and the residents of the City of New Bedford.

Sgt. Sarmento’s career reflects a long-standing commitment to public service and community safety. Beginning as a cadet in 1992 and later being sworn in as a police officer in 1996, he dedicated his professional life to protecting and serving the people of New Bedford. Over the course of his career, he worked a variety of patrol assignments at Stations 2 and 3, where he built strong connections within the community and earned the respect of fellow officers and residents alike.

Throughout his time with the department, Sgt. Sarmento took on several important roles that contributed to the safety and well-being of the city. His work in the Detective Division demonstrated his investigative skills and dedication to solving cases and supporting victims. Later, as a Community Police Officer out of Station 1, he played a key role in strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the neighborhoods he served, working closely with residents and local businesses to address concerns and improve quality of life.

In 2015, Sgt. Sarmento was promoted to Sergeant, a leadership role that allowed him to guide younger officers while continuing to serve the community on patrol. His leadership and experience were later utilized in his position as the Court Liaison Officer at Third District Court, where he helped coordinate the important connection between the police department and the court system through the end of his career.

A career spanning nearly 34 years in law enforcement is a significant achievement and reflects a deep dedication to public safety, professionalism, and service. Officers like Sgt. Sarmento help shape the culture of a department through their experience, mentorship, and commitment to doing the job the right way.
