Crime Trackers Massachusetts is recognizing the recent leadership appointments announced by New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody, naming Assistant Deputy Chief Derek Belong as the department’s new Deputy Chief of Operations and Debra J. Piehl as Deputy Director of Administrative Operations.
These appointments represent an important step in strengthening both the operational and administrative leadership of the New Bedford Police Department. The roles will work together to support the department’s mission by ensuring strong command oversight in the field while also enhancing the critical behind-the-scenes systems that support modern policing.
Deputy Chief Belong brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience to the role. Since joining the New Bedford Police Department in 2004, he has served in a variety of assignments including patrol, narcotics investigations, and federal task force work. His experience as a narcotics detective and ATF task force officer provided him with extensive exposure to complex criminal investigations and multi-agency collaboration.
Over the years, Belong advanced through the ranks, serving as Patrol Sergeant, Captain, and most recently Assistant Deputy Chief. In that role he oversaw major crime investigations, recruitment and training, internal affairs, and several administrative functions within the department. He also served as Acting Chief of Police prior to Chief Thody assuming command of the department, demonstrating the trust and confidence placed in his leadership. In his new position as Deputy Chief of Operations, he will oversee sworn personnel and core public safety operations, including patrol divisions, specialized units, and investigative functions, while also serving as Acting Chief in the Chief’s absence.
Crime Trackers Massachusetts also recognizes the appointment of Debra J. Piehl as Deputy Director of Administrative Operations. Piehl brings extensive experience in crime analysis, strategic planning, and public safety management from agencies across the country. Her work with Focused Engagement with Results (SAFER) has supported law enforcement agencies nationwide by helping departments implement data-driven strategies designed to reduce crime and improve public safety outcomes.
Throughout her career, Piehl has served in key analytical and leadership roles, including helping establish and supervise the New York City Police Department’s first civilian crime analyst program. She has also held positions with the Massachusetts State Police and the Newton Police Department, where her work focused on planning, research, accreditation, and operational analysis. Her background in CompStat management and public safety data systems will play a vital role in supporting evidence-based decision-making within the department.
The creation and strengthening of leadership roles that oversee both operational policing and administrative infrastructure reflects the evolving needs of modern law enforcement agencies. Effective public safety strategies rely not only on officers in the field but also on strong systems supporting technology, communications, budgeting, training, and data analysis.
Crime Trackers Massachusetts commends Chief Thody and the City of New Bedford for continuing to invest in experienced leadership and strategic public safety management. We congratulate Deputy Chief Belong and Deputy Director Piehl on their appointments and wish them success as they take on these important responsibilities.
Their leadership will play a key role in supporting the New Bedford Police Department’s continued efforts to serve the community, strengthen public trust, and enhance safety throughout the city.
