Crime Trackers Massachusetts strongly supports Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez and the Providence police officers who responded to assist him during Friday’s incident on Broadway.
Law enforcement officers across New England face difficult and often dangerous situations every day while serving their communities. What began as a minor traffic accident quickly escalated into a confrontation that placed a senior law enforcement official and responding officers in an unnecessary and volatile situation.
We commend Chief Perez for attempting to deescalate the situation and for handling the encounter with professionalism despite the aggressive behavior directed toward him. The responding Providence police officers also acted swiftly and appropriately to restore order, protect public safety, and ensure the situation did not escalate further.
Threats against law enforcement officers or public officials are unacceptable and should never be tolerated. Officers deserve to perform their duties without being subjected to intimidation, threats, or violence.
